In Genesis 1, God uses the word good seven times to describe His creation.
On the first day, God pronounces the Light good. On the third day, God pronounces the Earth and the Seas good. On the fifth day, God pronounces the Birds and the Sea Creatures good. And so on…
But how could the first day be good? It was nothing but Light and Darkness. God made Day and Night, but no sun, moon, or stars. There was no land yet. And no people.
When I use the word good, I tend to imply I’ve done everything I can, my project is complete, and now I’m done. But when God uses good, He is saying He’s done for now.
God could’ve made the cosmos in an instant, but He instead chose to make it day by day. Each day is good…until the next day when God does more and then calls that good.
Even on the sixth day, He gives Man an epic task:
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:28).
That’s a tall order. That is going to take millennia. And only after God gives Man his marching orders, does He pronounce His creation very good.
Both good and very good are to become better and even better.
God is doing that in your life today. The day ends and God says it’s good. But you say, “How can it be good, God? I still don’t have a job,” or “I’m still sick,” or “My business isn’t growing,” or “I’m still not married,” or “We can’t have kids,” or some other trial that’s even bigger, or so small you're afraid to bring it up.
God says it’s good, and just wait until you see what He has planned for tomorrow. Tomorrow will be even better.
How often do you look back on your day and say it’s good? Maybe you can’t say it’s good because there’s some sin you haven’t made right. Go and confess that sin to God first, and then to your neighbor if necessary. Once you’ve done that, is it good?
If you’ve confessed your sin, and still can’t say the day is good, you’re lacking in gratitude.
Don't focus on how you should’ve been able to finish everything and create your perfect world in an instant. Enjoy growing day by day. God built the world that way and He’s building you that way.
Thank You, Father, for a good day. And thank You that You’ll continue to grow me tomorrow.
What do you think?
Joseph
A very good exhortation. God gave us the pattern for all of life, including the day-to-day kingdom building work of living.
