Artificial Intelligence And What Does It Mean To Be Human?
AI has become more interesting in the last year.
And when something becomes interesting to the regular consumer, it can take off quickly.
There were smartphone-like devices before the iPhone, but they were only interesting to nerds, so they never got traction.
The iPhone was immediately interesting to the regular consumer, and within 5-10 years it became rare to find someone without some type of smartphone.
It was the same for the Ford Model T. Cars had been around for almost 30 years, but it was the Model T that was interesting.
Within about a decade after the Model T, cars had replaced horses.
So now that AI has become interesting, I’m paying attention to it. And so far, I most enjoy using it as a way to think about humans.
In short, I enjoy contemplating AI while asking the question, “What does it mean to be human?”
One of my answers is with regard to creativity. Humans know how to break the rules in such a way that another human sees the broken rule and feels like they’re part of an inside joke.
Maybe a word for that is personality.
I’ve heard that the average person sees 5,000-10,000 ads per day. But we have learned so quickly to filter them out and only focus on what we care about.
I wonder if we’ll get even better at filtering. Already right now I find myself learning how to spot something generated by AI vs a human.
So one of the ways that I can get better at being human is learning how to know the rules well enough to break them. And I need to break them in a way that other humans pick up on it.
What do you think? How would you answer the question, “What does it mean to be human?”
