Hopium
The Christian doesn’t hope as much as he should. He might preach the importance of faith or the greatness of love. But he guards himself from the disappointment of hope.
On the other hand, there is a hope that is all wrong. The hope that one more relationship will fulfill all your needs. The hope that some new town will erase all your failures. The hope that this week’s lottery ticket will fix everything.
This isn’t hope, it’s hopium. It’s not Paul’s faith, hope, love (1 Corinthians 13:3), it’s an addiction.
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV).
True hope strives to comprehend how God could do above all that we ask or think. Yes, even exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.
Hopium looks for one more fix from one more idol.
