How To Enjoy Math
When I was around 10 years old, my mom got me a math tutor named Lynn. Math was drudgery for me, but Lynn loved it. And my struggle with math didn’t seem to bother her. She was confident I would eventually enjoy math as much as she did.
She was very encouraging. She would use games to teach me different concepts. And she always made the problems interesting instead of dry and boring.
She was right and I did start to enjoy math, and that enjoyment has only grown over the years.
The funny thing is that math never changed. The only thing that changed was my perspective.
Dan Sullivan has a question that I’ve found helpful in changing my perspective, “What if this didn’t bother me?” And I ask other similar questions. For example, what would this experience be like if I enjoyed math?
We know this is true for hobbies. Maybe you love fishing. There are also people who hate fishing. But fishing doesn’t change. Only the perspective of the fisherman changes.
As always, you can’t maintain joy with unconfessed sin in your life. First, make things right with God and your neighbor if appropriate. And then, if you can’t change your circumstances, simply change your perspective.
What do you think?
