I Wish It Didn't Happen
“‘I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo.
‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us’” (The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, 2012, p51).
This is always true. One can always say, “I wish this didn’t have to happen.”
Sometimes it happens because of our own bad decisions. Sometimes it’s altogether outside of our power.
Either way, once it’s happened, wishing it away isn’t helpful. That is not for us to decide.
All we can decide is how to respond.
