The Source of All Freedom
What is freedom?
Freedom is the Gospel.
If God is the Source of all freedom, joy, truth, goodness, beauty, love, etc., then why would one cut themselves off from that Source?
Having fellowship with that Source is what Heaven is all about. Heaven isn’t just a place.
If someone who hated God was in Heaven the place, it would be Hell to him.
C.S. Lewis says in The Great Divorce, “I think earth, if chosen instead of Heaven, will turn out to have been, all along, only a region in Hell: and earth, if put second to Heaven, to have been from the beginning, a part of Heaven itself.”
Heaven is more and more freedom, joy, truth, goodness, beauty, love, etc., because it is the process of growing closer and closer to the Source of those things.
Hell is less and less freedom, joy, truth, goodness, beauty, love, etc., because it is the process of growing farther and farther from the Source of those things.
It’s hard being in Hell. Hell is full of sin and misery.
If you are in Hell, Jesus gives clear instructions on how to get out, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15 NKJV).
The time is now, not in the future and not in the past.
The place is here at hand, not way up in the sky and not way down under the earth.
Repent means to turn away from for your sin and misery. Believe means to turn toward Jesus Christ.
So turn away from your sin and turn toward your Savior.
But why wouldn’t you turn away from Hell and turn toward Heaven? Why wouldn’t you turn away from your sin and turn toward the Source of all freedom, joy, truth, goodness, beauty, love?
I don’t know who can answer that question, because it doesn’t make sense. It’s irrational.
But I do know that being irrational lets you keep your pride. Humiliating yourself to the point of admitting that you’re wrong isn’t fun.
Are you willing to enjoy Heaven now and forever simply by admitting that you are wrong and that God is right?
“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NKJV).
Do you know that you are a sinner? Do you hate your sin and the misery that it causes in your life? And do you know that there is nothing you can do to save yourself?
Do you believe that Jesus paid for your sins by dying on the cross? And do you believe that He rose again from the dead for your justification and now reigns as King over all things?
Have you called upon Him and received Him as your Lord and Savior? Have you thanked Him for your salvation? And do you now want to talk about the Gospel and your salvation with others? (I’d love to hear about it if you aren’t sure who else to tell.)
In the end, true Freedom is only found in the Gospel. The Gospel simply means Good News. And, ultimately, God Himself is that Good News.
So the beginning of being a Freeman is enjoying the Freedom that can only be found in God.
